Aqueduct
This work is the result of one of those days, when after spending some time without going out to paint from nature, a group of friends visited the town of Estivella, "a town near Valencia", to prepare for a Trail, me with my gear to paint a picture.
After walking around the town a few times, without finding a view that caught my attention, I walked away from it looking for a broader view of the town and came across the river and this Aqueduct of the Arches.
I have always been fascinated by ancient buildings, the importance of water in towns and cities, from irrigation for fields to consumption and, of course, this aqueduct has its history.
A 16th century aqueduct over the course of the Palancia River , which forms part of the Acequia Mayor de Sagunto and is still in use today, helping to irrigate the lands on both sides of the river and to carry water to the end of Albalat dels Tarongers. It is believed to be built on the remains of a similar Roman construction that was also used in the Almohad period and was destroyed after the Reconquista in 1581 after a strong influx of water. The 16th century construction reused many of the old ashlars. The aqueduct is made up of 12 arches of different styles – semicircular, lowered and pointed –, very wide and reinforced with buttresses at some points to break the force of the water. They rest on the old piers.
